The School of Manufacturing System Engineering was first established in March 2003 and later renamed School of Manufacturing Engineering (PPKP) after approval from the Ministry of Higher Education in October 2004.
In line with national industrial growth, PPKP currently offers two Bachelors degree programmes - Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Manufacturing Engineering) and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Product Design Engineering), and one Diploma programme - Diploma of Engineering (Manufacturing Engineering). All undergraduate programmes are taught, full time programmes. A typical B. Eng. (Hons) (Product Design Engineering) student takes 4 years (8 semesters) to complete the programme, of which English is the main medium of instruction. In addition, Bahasa Melayu is also used in some courses. The aim of the programmes is to produce graduates who possess not only theoretical technical knowledge but also equipped with skills that are important to ensure their successful participation in the engineering community. Hence, the structures of the curricula are designed to deliver these important knowledge and skills.
At the moment, the School has 359 undergraduate students enrolled in the Manufacturing Engineering programme and 231 undergraduate students enrolled in Product Design Engineering programme.
Apart from undergraduate programmes, PPKP also offers postgraduate programmes, namely MSc (Manufacturing Engineering) and MSc (Product Design Engineering) plus a mix-mode programme, MEng (Manufacturing System Engineering) that going to be offered in January 2013.
In 2009, PPKP moved from UniMAP’s campus in Kuala Perlis to the University’s permanent campus in Pauh Putra, Arau, Perlis.
The first batch of students in Product Design engineering (totalling 47) graduated in 2009, 64 in 2010, 38 in 2011 and 34 students graduated in 2012. 56 numbers of student is expected to finish their study in 2013.
